Southern Mutual Insurance Company
Serving Customers' Insurance Needs Since 1847
Southern Mutual was founded by a group of concerned Georgians who saw the need for a regional, mutual insurance company to provide insurance against fire for those outside of the larger metropolitan areas. Up until this point property insurance was only available from large, investor-owned, northern insurance companies. Southern Mutual was chartered by the Georgia Legislature on December 29, 1847.
From its beginning Southern Mutual has maintained the latest coverages in personal lines insurance for our customers. In the early years we insured cotton and molasses in transport, ships, factories and plantation houses. The scope of coverages has changed considerably over the years, but the company's original mission "to bear ye one another's burdens" has remained the same. Southern Mutual has successfully withstood three major wars, the Great Depression, and borne the financial burdens of thousands of our insureds over the decades from numerous devastating hurricanes and conflagrations.
Unlike many insurance companies that are owned by investors, Southern Mutual Insurance Company is owned by its policyholders. Our employees are dedicated to providing our policyholder/owners the very best in service and at competitive rates. It is this focus on customer service that has allowed Southern Mutual to prosper since 1847.
Today Southern Mutual offers personal lines insurance through our many fine independent agents located throughout the States of Georgia and South Carolina. The home office has been based in Athens, Georgia since 1848.
